Good governance

Last updated: 26/08/2009 // Mozambique' democracy is young. The transition from a war-ridden country to today's politically stable Mozambique is remarkable. However, there are still considerable challenges related to good governance, like the issues of transparency, corruption and checks-and-balances in society.

APRM
The Embassy has financially supported the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM)  in Mozambique since 2006, amounting to a total of 7.200.000 NOK over 4 years. APRM is a mechanism established under the auspices of the African Union, where member countries review the development in fellow countries in the fields of e.g economic governance, political governance and socioeconomic development. Mozambique presented it's report to the APRM panel in July 2009, and is consequently in the final phase of the APRM process. An actionplan has been developed and will be incorporated into national planning structures (PARPA III).

Observatório Eleitoral
A number of Mozambican civil society organisations are cooperating under the umbrella of Observatório Eleitoral (OE) in order to provide national election observers for local and national elections. These observers fill an important role trying to ensure fair play and transparency on election days. OE is also a watchdog on other matters related to elections and democratic rules of the game. The Embassy support OE with 5.500.000 NOK.

AWEPA
The Association of Western European Parliamentarians has a local branch in Maputo which provides capacitybuilding and training related to political work and governance. Training is provided for staff and elected members of Parliament and local municipalities, as well as for political parties. The Embassy provides 2.200.000 NOK in support to AWEPA Mozambique.
