INE is Mozambique's National Statistics Institute, and has the responsibility for collecting and producing reliable statistical information on all areas of the Mozambican society.
The role of statistics is widely recognised as an essential tool for managing a modern and democratic state and it is also widely recognised that statistical information makes an unequivocal contribution to economic and social development as well as povert monitoring. INE is responsable for the planning, implementation, analysis of data and dissemination of all natrional surveys and censuses as well as collecting administrative routine data.
The support of the National Statistics Institute (INE) is a cooperation between the statistical institutes of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and the National Statistics Institute of Mozambique (INE) and includes capacity building, financial support and cooperation. Over a four year period (2003 - 2007), Norway will contribute with NOK 28 million to INE. Based on a posivite evaluation done by Norad in December 2007 a second phase of support up to NOK 30 million was signed to cover the period 2008-2012. Contrary to earlier years the support is now channeled through a common fund together with other bi- and multilateral donors.
