In order to obtain a permit to study in Norway you must have a firm offer of admission from an officially recognised educational institution. In addition, you must be a full-time student, have a place to live during your stay and be able to finance your studies. The general rules for a residence permit for educational purposes also apply to exchange students.
Study permits are granted for the same length of time as the duration of the education but not for more than one year. The permit may be renewed. You will get the right to work up to 50 % of full-time, and accompanying family members are granted a general permit to take employment. It is only the closest family that may accompany you to Norway. Closest family includes spouse or cohabitant of at least two years and children. If accompanied by your family you must be able to provide for your family members, and your family members must have a health insurance.
