Norwegian Embassy in football tournament

Last updated: 12/05/2010 // It was “close, but no cigar”, for the team from the Norwegian Embassy’s team in the Scandinavian football tournament in Maputo May 7th. Despite heroic efforts the team was not crowned with victory, as Denmark secured a draw in their last match against Norway, thereby winning the tournament.

The Scandinavian school in Maputo was the scene for blood, sweat and tears as Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the School’s own team competed for glory and recognition in the annual Scandinavian football tournament. The Norwegian Embassy suffered a blow even before the tournament started, as the team’s captain and anticipated top goal scorer, José Capote, was injured during training. Nevertheless, the Embassy’s trusted representatives easily beat the School’s team 2 – 0, but were denied a rest between two matches and went on a humiliating defeat against a recovered Swedish side.

The scene was set for a dramatic last match when Norway was the only team left to challenge the Danes. Despite an early lead and controlling the play, Norway failed to take the three points as the Danes scored a lucky equalizer and fended off the Norwegian pressure. The victory will hopefully contribute to boost Danish confidence ahead of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in June, where Denmark will defend Scandinavian pride.

Final Score:

1.       Denmark: 7 points

2.       Sweden: 4 points

3.       Norway: 4 points

4.       School: 1 point
