"Nora's sisters" seminar in Maputo

The Norwegian Embassy is hosting a seminar entitled "Nora's sisters" on Monday 6 November. The seminar is but one in a row that the Norwegian Government will hold in six countries - namely Mozambique, India, Egypt, Italy, China and Israel).

03/11/2006 :: The inspiration for the subject matter is derived from the writing of Ibsen. The female characters in much of Ibsen's writings challenged the acceptend norms and postions of women of his era. The both challenged conventional thinking and perhaps forced readers to examine their own position in the gender equation. It is this spirit of Ibsen almost a century later that this seminar will try to capture.

Graca Machel, Executive Director of FDC, will be giving the key note address entitled "Women's Rights - Challenges in Mozambique", but also prominent persons like writer Henning Mankell, professor Helge Rønning, writer Mia Couto, Writer/journalist Rosa Langa, actress Tania Pires and human rights defender Alice Mabota will hold interventions. The intention of the seminar is to provoke discussion and debate on the role of women today and the challenges that are faced by women in Mozambique.

Following the seminar, at the Teatro Avenida, the theater group Mutumbela Gogo, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary, will perform the World Premiere of "Nora's daugthers". The play is penned by world renowned author Henning Mankell. His play draws on the writings of Ibsen, but places the three female characters in a moderns context.
